Your best shoulder!
The one-shoulder dress is back in vogue. The Golden Globe Awards saw a bevy of Hollywood beauties including Cameron Diaz, Sandra Bullock, Maggie Gyllenhaal and America Ferrera sport the trend. Then there was America’s new First Lady Michelle Obama who looked
stunning in a white chiffon one-shouldered ballgown at the inaugural Neighbourhood Ball. Closer home, socialites and Bollywood stars too have been seen wearing the one-shouldered gown.
And it’s not just the gown, the one-shoulder silhouette has also been adapted to sari and lehenga blouses and kurtas as well.
A far cry from the original, basic Grecian-inspired cut, today the shoulder strap has gone narrower, more delicate, embellished and in some cases, replaced by pieces of jewellery like broaches, buckles and strands of pearls. Calling it her fave silhouette, designer Maheka Mirpuri, says “Right from the pleated look, to a colour co-ordinated one with one colour on the front and another behind, I have also use rouching and net for the shoulder strap and designed it using jewelled buckles.” While designer Falguni Peacock says, “A big bow, one-string strap, tie-ups and feather broaches are some of the styles we have used for one-shoulder Western garments and Indian wear.”
According to stylist Varsha Bhawnani, the strap has become narrower showing off more skin. “It has been put in focus eliminating the need to wear a neckpiece or a broach,” she adds. So what are the different styles she is seeing? “Jute ropes, jewel pieces for the straps, fur straps, cap sleeve, a knot, one shoulder verging on off-shoulder, a strapless dress with a one-shouldered sash in a different fabric are some of the many variations,” she says. Another happening trend is the one shoulder in a kaftan style look.
Meanwhile designer Anupama says the hottest new trend in this silhouette is to not separate the fabric of the shoulder. “Using the same fabric, one can wear a high embellished look, be it a string of roses, ropes of pearls, chunky wooden beads or even little ceramic figures, just let your imagination run wild,” she explains. It’s not just those very sophisticated evening wear gowns that are in.
“One-shouldered tops in flowy, floral prints are just as happening as the gowns,” says Varsha. Time to show off your best side, ladies.
