Sourabhee Debbarma: Kapil is more than a friend
Saurabhee Debbarma has finally broken a jinx of sorts, as she becomes the first female Indian Idol. But the winner of Season 4 of the popular reality show says that she had participated thinking it’d be okay even if she got into the top 10. “I never thought I will be the winner.
I always wished that people recognise my voice, but now that I am the winner, I am so very happy,” says the girl excitedly.
And has it sunk in that she is now a celebrity? “Not really. But when I visited my home a few months back, the way people greeted me made me feel very special. It was overwhelming,” says Saurabhee who celebrated her win by doing what she likes best, dancing and singing with co-contestants and parents till the wee hours. “I am so tired, I was dancing till four am. But I can’t rest as I have to give so many interviews,” says she.
Saurabhee’s father, who had not been too happy with his daughter’s choice of becoming a rockstar initially, is now the happiest. “My father was against the idea of my becoming a singer. But after I had completed my BBA, he himself went and filled the Indian Idol participation form, and told me later that I had to participate,” says Saurabhee, who plans to gift the car she’s won, to her parents.
She also plans to buy her sister a gift and share the prize money with the people of Tripura (her home state) by donating part of it to the CM’s Relief Fund and sponsor a school for music and dance. The watch given to her by Sonali Bendre, says Saurabhee, is something that she won’t part with. She also regrets that she couldn’t get to keep any of the dresses that she wore on the show. “There were such nice dresses, but I could wear them only on the show. I specially loved the black saree with the golden brocade blouse that I wore for the finale when I performed with Kailash Kher,” she says.
Though the 22-year old is mighty happy about her win, does she carry that slightest guilt for having defeated her beau, Kapil? “See, each one of us participated to be the winner – and it was me. But I wanted Kapil to win,” says she. And what about their relationship? “Kapil and I are more than friends. He is very nice and we have always been very close.” Future plans? “I want to become a rockstar.”
