Scarlett Johansson and Rahul to meet
Rahul Bose is off to the US of A soon and it’s all for a good cause. For multiple good causes. Actually he is thinking actor and six speaking engagements over 12 days in America. For one he is there for 3 fund raisers for Pratham the NGO that works for the education of children. A university there has invited me to speak about my experiences as an actor, a sportsperson and a social activist
he says.
I am also a global ambassador for Oxfam. So on the same trip, Oxfam is having an assemblage of all their global ambassadors. There’ll be Scarlett Johansson, Annie Lennox, Desmond Hounsou from Blood Diamond, Gael Garcia Bernal and I… We are all going to be together and talking about the millennium development goals and how our various places in the world are far behind in attaining those goals. So that new.
Now, that’s not just new, that’s impressive. But Rahul’s doing impressive things, and not just abroad. On home ground, his NGO is taking up a new initiative, and on the personal front, Rahul’s going to be training for a rugby tournament coming up in February. “My NGO’s next initiative is for the victims of child sexual abuse. In a year from now, the foundation is going to be the one place in the country where the victim of sexual abuse can walk in and get legal, financial, medical and physiological help,” he says.
However, participating actively in social development initiatives and rugby hasn’t done anything to lessen Rahul’s enjoyment of, or involvement in, cinema. He’s been doing movies across genres, and despite his failures, is looking to enter new ground. “I don’t think I was good enough in Maan Gaye Mughal-E-Azam ,” he says candidly. “I think it’s important to take responsibility for the lack of appreciation of that film as an actor. That’s new too, because it’s not something I’m used to. A film with Paresh Rawal, Kay Kay Menon and Pawan Malhotra should have been a happy release at the Box Office. It is not my intention to do one more such comedy in my life.”
He also has no intention of doing another action movie… after he does his first and only one. “I’m looking at an action film because I have five world cinema films coming up. In Tahaan , I have a cameo, then there’s Before The Rains , which is coming after its success in the US and the UK, The Japanese Wife, the Bengali film called Antaheen and The Whisperers. So because I’m doing these very out of the box movies, I opted for an action film. I’ve never done one. But after playing rugby for 25 years, I guess the time is right. I’m looking at doing one next year in March.”
