Pooja Bedi back in shape
Pooja Bedi, inching towards 40, worried about slipping fitness levels, goes to a boot camp in Thailand, and comes back looking like this… Iam lucky to be genetically blessed. I love food but due to my active lifestyle, have never been fat or flabby. Swimming, trekking, outdoor
sports activities have been a part of life right from childhood through youth. After marriage too, I tried all kinds of fitness forms – yoga, power yoga, kickboxing and tai chi.
Last year I let myself go. Possibly because I was putting my finger into too many pies and couldn’t pay attention to myself. Surprisingly, all the dancing I did for reality shows made me pile on the pounds! Moreover I was low on energy which is rare. I felt unfit and sapped by work.
A few weeks ago, a friend who was partner at Bio Resurge, a health, fatloss, body reshaping institute in Thailand suggested I try their 21-day wellness programme. It sounded perfect – what better way to get back into shape in the new year than by trying out a great body makeover experience?
It was a fantastically structured, monitored and intensive three-week regimen involving six hours of cardio, gymming, and walking along with proper nutrition. An ideal “health booster shot”. Of course it was tough, — almost like a “five-star boot camp”as I call it — but the result was worth every minute.
Wake up time: 6.30 am. By 7.30 am you were ready for a glass of protein shake (6 egg whites, one egg yolk, fruits and crushed ice) after which you proceeded for your walk. The two-hour compulsory walk down to the pier and back was exhilarating. There was no need to indulge in brisk-walking, it was more at a window shopping pace that helped loosen the muscles and prepare the body for the intense workout that was to follow.
After the walk, you were served breakfast, mainly comprising eggs. No toast or any other form of carb. After an hour of rest, the gym session began — customised and tailored to suit your needs. My objective was toning and sculpting, not weight loss, hence workouts were designed to mainly help me strengthen my legs, thighs, arms and abs. Every day, some body part was focused upon — legs, shoulder, sides or abs. While a variety of cardio, weights, strength training exercises etc were recommended, the onehour workout avoided treadmills or too much running. Instead exercises that were meant to strengthen and reshape the body, improve muscle tone and increase lean body mass (LBM) were highlighted.
Post gymming, there was a relaxing massage waiting for you. You could choose from a range of treatments, from oil to non-oil massages depending on your workout and need. So if your shoulders felt sore after all the weights, it felt ideal to get a back and neck massage.
Lunch time was elaborate. A delicious gourmet meal comprising varied meats and salads – fit enough for a king. There were no dietary restrictions, though the meals were obviously balanced to the exercise methodologies, with low on fat and high on protein.
After lunch, you could have your time for relaxation and then it was time for the evening workout. Here cardio was given importance, either through indoor or outdoor activities. So one day it was mountain climbing, the other day cycling or swimming. While you could choose your activity, each was strictly monitored by accompanying trainers. By the time the entire routine was over, you were exhausted. Dinner would be served at about 7.30 pm and in an hour it was time to crash! These regular gym exercises combined with the walk and outdoor sports along with a strict, nutritious diet is the core of the programme.
IT WORKED WONDERS
This was the schedule for 21 days. But the results were immediate and those three weeks did for me what probably six-eight months of regular gymming probably didn’t. I felt the fat melting away giving way to a leaner, meaner and well-toned body. My skin started glowing due to the exercises and drinking lots of water. And my hair was shining — thanks to all the eggs in my diet!
It felt great to acquire rock-solid, fab abs, toned shoulders and great legs. Totally, I shed about six kilos of fat and gained about 7 kilos of muscle. In fact, though my weight increased by a kilo at the end of the programme, I lost inches around my waist.
The good part about the programme is that they feed you well – extremely important for a foodie like me! Apart from feeling rejuvenated, it also disciplined me. I am motivated to maintain myself and my current two-hour gym routine feels like a cakewalk. The energy levels are high too.
What’s more, I love my new look and that’s all that matters in the end.
