Kunal Kohli: Single, not ready to mingle
Kunal Khemu is on a fun-filled trip. Two of his films Jai Veeru and Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge! will be released soon. “I’m charged up about my films. It was really great fun working on them. I would just like to say one thing, that there is absolutely no reference of Sholay in Jai Veeru
as the name suggests. It’s just that the friendship of Jai and Veeru have set an example for everyone. That is all. It’s an action comedy with Fardeen Khan, and I play the funnier guy.” He goes on to add, “Even Dhoondte Reh Jaaoge! is an out and out entertainer. There is complete madness with Johnny Lever and Asrani amongst other actors. I play this loser who finally gets a girl. Then he has to prove his love to her by lying. That one lie leads to ten others,” explains Kunal.
So, now that it’s time for the laughs, is serious cinema taking a back-seat? “Not really. I don’t make a conscious effort to go towards comedy or serious cinema. After watching Dhol, a lot of people told me that I did well when it came to comedy. That gave me the confidence to, sort of, venture towards them. But, intense roles have not taken a back-seat,” says the actor.
Even though box office hasn’t been too kind to him, Kunal has always managed to get the admiration of critics. What does he have to say about it? “I have had my share of ups and downs when it comes to success, but that’s alright. I give my best to the film. Later, how it is handled is not in my control. I’m just happy people like my work. I’m here to do honest work and leave the rest to destiny,” says he.
What does Kunal think about the recent comparison with late actor Heath Ledger? “After Traffic Signal released, people saw me with kohl in my eyes and compared me with Johnny Depp in the Pirates of the Caribbean. After Superstar, now it’s Heath Ledger. I did check the comparisons on the internet. There are some similarities. As long as they happen to be made with such great actors, it’s all good,” smiles he.
Despite such handsome comparisons, isn’t the single status a little hard to believe? “I am very much single. I think around this age every one is busy getting their careers together. But, in the future, you might just hear something,” says he. We are sure single women are listening.
