Ashutosh Rana on small screen!
Ashutosh Rana is a talented actor, no doubt. He might have not done many films but he has proved his mettle with his choice of roles. And the actor has a reason for not signing whatever roles come his way. “Sometimes you don’t reach the kind of roles you want to
do and sometimes, the roles you want to do don’t reach you. In such a case, it’s better to wait than do ten things people don’t remember you for,” he says.
For now, it’s the small screen for him. Ashutosh is now anchoring Sarkaar Ki Duniya, a reality show where he will be Sarkaar. “He is a system, a thought process, an inner voice who will direct the participants, not correct them,” he explains his role. For Ashutosh, it was the concept of the show that pulled him in. “People are looking for success but most don’t know how to get it and when they get it, they don’t know how to digest it. In this show, we will show them how to get it and digest it,” he adds.
But for somebody who made his TV debut with Swabhimaan, this is not a comeback. “I have continued doing TV shows like Dhundh, Baazi Kiski and Apradhi Kaun in between films,” he says.
What strikes one about Ashutosh, apart from his dedication to his craft, is that the actor has a tendency to go on and on about himself, and that too in shuddh Hindi! Since Sarkaar’s role requires somebody with a striking personality and deep baritone, we couldn’t help asking him, who he thought would fit the role better if he had not been chosen. “Agar hum ye role nahin kar rahe hote, toh hum hi yeh role karte!” he grins. Guess we stand corrected!
As for films, wife Renuka Shahane is all set to direct him in her second film. “Her first film Reeta is women-oriented and she didn’t want me to play second fiddle to the women,” he laughs. He’s sure she’ll do a great job of directing him though. “Just like she directs me in real life, she will direct me well in the film too,” adds Ashutosh. But when does the Indian audience get to see the couple together? “I feel she’s the greatest actress we have and she feels her husband is the best actor. So Shekhar Kapoor will have to make a Masoom again or Gulzar will have to make an Aandhi again to do justice to us,” he concludes.
